The entire village assembled to see the spectacle. The proud niece of the Duke, who had spent the last three years stealing from local shops, insulting local food and flirting with the husbands and beaus of any girls who crossed her, had finally gone too far. It was Easter and she was drunk on a bill she most certainly wouldn't pay, incensed at being ignored by the local taverner. In revenge, she had turned loose his horse, taken an axe to one of his barrels and watched it drain, and spat at his serving girls. The taverner, protective of his livelihood and workers, stripped the fine clothes off the incandescent girl and dressed her in a peasant frock his daughter had once worn. He announced he was adopting her as his ward for the day and took her outside for a smart switching.
"What you've been lacking, my girl," he growled, as he leaned her over the central well, "is a guardian who'll spank you when you're troublesome. Now, I've no doubt there's many in this village would like a turn so I won't hog your hide, but I do demand first whipping.
Now, up with your skirts!"
"No!" she screeched. "Stay away, you horrible yokel! I shall call for a Justice of the Peace!"
With that, she dodged out from in front of him and ran to the far side of the well.
It didn't take the landlord long to catch her and reinstall the struggling brat in the whipping position. He flipped up her skirts to reveal snowy white frilled knickers.
"Very fetching!" he chuckled, and brought down the switch on her quivering bottom.
Her yowls and yelps brought the whole village running, and as predicted, many were keen to have a go in return for the trouble and torment the young lady had put them through.
"Now now, there'll be time for everyone to take what's owed," grinned the landlord. "But what say we make this a part of the festive celebrations, and charge a penny a stroke to whip the whelp? Why, we could fix all the damage she's done in a few hours!"
It was agreed, and not only that, the spoilt niece was wheeled out the following year, with her exasperated uncle's blessing, to have another ceremonial thrashing. It only took five years of red bottomed outrage for her to mend her ways, after which the village hailed the landlord as a local hero.
