Jane bit her lip, remembering being bent over the arm of the chaise, her drawers unlaced, leaving her bottom exposed first for a hand-spanking, then a caning. She could still feel the burning lines beneath her petticoats. Ugh, she hated this prissy china-doll dress! She was 18, for God's sake. This get-up was more suited to some spoiled ten-year-old! Why could she not change into her knickerbockers and linen blouse and go out riding?
The dainty shoes Mr Bracewell had put her in pinched her feet and caused her to mince along in a ridiculous way, and her outfit had so many ruffles and flounces Jane felt as though she were drowning. Why had her guardian whipped her into dressing like this?
Her answer came with a knock at the door.
"Ah, my little tearaway has her first special visitor," said Mr Bracewell.
"Whatever do you mean?" said Jane, itching at her hat.
A well-dressed older gentleman was shown in.
"My my," he said. "She is delightful. My compliments, Bracewell. You've outdone yourself."
"I'll leave you alone," said Bracewell. "And Jane, be a good girl for Mr Rackham. I've left him my tawse and cane, so if you're insolent or fail in any way to be a sweet, obedient little angel for him, he shall have your drawers down and your little bottom scarlet."
As he left, Bracewell locked the door behind him.
Jane shivered as her special visitor approached.
