The young girl tied to the riverside bench wriggled and yelped as the birch came down. Her eyes streamed as pain roared across her bottom.
The local Justice of the Peace, in an unusual move, had taken it upon himself to punish the young miscreant brought before his court. But then, she was his niece.
Georgina had no shortage of money, but she enjoyed taking trinkets wherever she saw them. Fond of thrills, the young madam had bitten off more than she could chew after stealing a necklace from an eagle-eyed proprietor. Caught by the ear and hauled up before her uncle, she had expected clemency, but instead, the magistrate made an example of her.
He had her taken to the whipping bench and stripped by one of the constables. Next he invited each of the people from whom she had stolen to come and cut off a hank of her long hair. Soon she had nothing but a boyish mop left. Finally she was bound to the bench and the JP took off his fine coat and brought out a birch.
"Two dozen to begin with," he announced. "And then I shall consult the assembled. They should have a say in your fate. I doubt you'll be thieving much after this, or even leaving the house with your plain little haircut. You'd be mistaken for a schoolboy and whipped for truancy!"
The bold young thief burst into tears, to the laughter of the crowd.
"Dear me," said one, a dressmaker who had lost ribbons to those nimble fingers. "This will be the best entertainment we've had in years! Pray begin!"
The JP smiled and obliged.
